| The VOC
|
In 1602 Dutch lords established
the Dutch East India Company (VOC) under a government charter.
The Company soon developed a booming trade. Their success was
due, in part, to the use of the 'trade winds' and currents of the Indian Ocean.
It became apparent that it was quicker not to sail up the coast of East Africa,
but to head directly off the coast of South Africa and approach Asia from the
south.
By mid-century the VOC had 6,000 ships and nearly 50,000
sailors. It wielded great power and controlled significant territories in Asia.
