| The struggle
for political freedom in South Africa, and now the dynamic efforts towards
economic development make the townships the most interesting and instructive
part of any trip to Cape Town. It is best to visit the townships with a
registered guide (see private tours).
Roddy Bray offers
township tours.

The fabulous
gardens at Kirstenbosch in Bishopscourt, set on the slopes of Table Mountain,

beaches. Start at the Waterfront and follow the coastline through Sea Point to
Clifton, Camps Bay, Llandudno and Hout Bay. Take a boat trip from Hout Bay
harbour to see the seals.
Perhaps return over Constantia Nek and take in Constantia

| Many visitors
appreciate visiting Robben Island - where Nelson Mandela spent much of his
imprisonment. Unfortunately not all of the guides and staff are competent, the
buses are old and the sea can be rough. If your time is short a township tour
is a better choice

Timing: half day
Departures from the Waterfront throughout the day |
|
|
| The attraction
of the West Coast are the wildflowers in August/ September at Postberg and the
picturesque Langebaan lagoon. There is also the Afrika Village at the West
Coast Ostrich Farm. The area is however quite dry and underdeveloped.

Timing: full day
Total Distance: approx 250kms |
|
|
| The drive east
of Cape Town is picturesque, especially via Franschhoek or Riebeek Kasteel.
There are rolling hills and wheat fields with a backdrop of mountains, and some
pretty villages at Greyton, Ceres and Tulbagh. Try to include the Hex River
Valley (De Doorns). Stay overnight somewhere if possible.
